The rooster and the ocean, a story 🐓 🌊 🌊

When I was in college I studied documentary photography with Alex Harris. I loved taking photographs for the assignments. I loved his lectures and slide shows in class. The darkness, the click of the projector, the larger than life images on screen. I even loved the assigned readings. But when it came down to meetings with him about the final project, the whole point of the class, I felt so overwhelmed and intimidated my brain would shut down. I learned soo much I couldn’t organize my thoughts, so we didn’t make a lot of progress. I changed topics several times and he really didn’t mind, he was 💯 artist and didn’t care about the grades or the academia, he was so understanding and engaging. I kept soaking up what he said and feeling excited about every single thing.

Finally I ran out of time, and in our final one-on-one meeting, I’ll never forget, we looked at what I had to work with. I had spent a few days taking shots in this neighborhood where everyone was working on this one car. Like it was the neighborhood project. It was a beautiful car. Alex and I sorted through some negatives and we both agreed that this random spontaneous picture of a rooster I caught running under the car was my best work 😂 if we had more time, we would build on that one shot. The rooster shot 🐓

You never know what you’ll learn from— failures, successes, random encounters. I feel like my entire job when I’m holding a camera is to stay out of the way. I think that’s what he taught me, I just wasn’t ready to learn it yet. I feel like sometimes the ocean calls, and the finished image is my response 🤍🩵
